ZIGGY MARLEY SPREADS LOVE

Ziggy Marley began the first verse of Beach in Hawaii by singing, “Playing on the Golden Sand, looking at the Ocean now I understand. Love is like an open sea, and I wish you were here with me”. I think this song really connects to the lover in all of us. “Since you’ve been gone away,” Marley sings, “I think about you everyday. Don’t you know I missed you much, and you know I need your touch,”.

The chorus of the song includes Marley saying how he wishes his girl came to the beach of Hawaii with him. I, as a lover, and a Christian personally know how it feels when you are somewhere, and you wish the girl you like stood beside you. One of my old loved ones would appreciate the B-Boy/B-Girl Culture in Boston, but she is living in some undisclosed location.

He ends the song with a powerful guitar solo that lets one meditate about life.

HIP-HOP BEGINS TO MATURE (2013)

I just finished jamming to NORE’s and Large Professor’s song called Built Pyramids. After listening to it I went shopping: I guess I felt complete. Before listening to this song, I never really listened to NORE and I never heard of Large Professor. The homie, Mayan Tamang, put me on to them, and I am grateful because this song is going in my weekly rotation.

In the chorus, Large Professor lets us know that Africans built the pyramids from the ground up, and presently, many Africans in the Diaspora are living in the hood. This message got me thinking about how powerful people can be when they unite to work on something. I just want to mention a fact that most people have no knowledge of: average workers built the pyramids in Egypt.

NORE states what life in Queens New York is like, and what makes the place popular. He alluded that Queens has a hardcore reputation with its drug dealers, basketball players, and rappers. One note worthy part of the song was when he mentioned the many Jamaican Beef Patty Cocoa Bread shops in the hood and how Jamaican Americans love these places. On the other hand, some Jamaicans do drugs so he calls them cocoa heads.

I appreciate Built Pyramids because two older emcees in hip-hop made the record and made it work. This shows that hip-hop is maturing. The beat is extremely east coast and even gets you moving a little bit. The two steppers will appreciate this beat; so will the b-boys and b-girls. I loved the lyrics of the track because they tell a story in each bar.

I can go to bed happy tonight, since I know that hip-hop is in a good place.

CAN I KICK IT? RECAP WRITTEN BY NYADENYA INYAGWA

After finding God, I took to my natural instincts and denounced hip-hop and its elements because I viewed them as bad influences. However, I grew up with the culture and therefore could not give up on it that easily. After a 4-month hiatus from hip-hop, I have revamped myself to find the positivity in it.

The Boston hip-hop scene is just oozing with positivity and on Feb. 16, 2013, over 200 people went to Paris Street Art Gallery in Everett to buy sneakers and T-shirts, take pictures of wonderful art, and watch B-Boy/B-girl Battles, and MC performances during Can I Kick it.

Due to my love of positivity I decided to find out why Can I Kick it is good for the youth. “Events like this are good for my kids because it gives them an opportunity to use their money wisely,” said Missy Raduazzo, a parent who brought her children to the event “ and it gives them an incentive to do better in school”.
